Study finds marijuana use leads to brain development in rats

Saturday, October 15, 2005

In the November issue of the Journal of Clinical Investigation, researchers announce that they have found that cannabinoids promoted a generation of new neurons in rats’ hippocampi. The study held true for both a plant-derived and a synthetic cannabinoid. The hippocampus is a part of the brain that contributes to learning and memory. In particular, it has been shown that the hippocampus is essential for the formation of new episodic memories.

“This is quite a surprise, chronic use of marijuana may actually improve learning memory when the new neurons in the hippocampus can mature in two or three months,” said Xia Zhang, with the Neuropsychiatry Research Unit of the University of Saskatchewan.

“Our results were obtained from rats, and there’s a big difference between rats and humans,” added Zhang, “So, I really don’t know yet if our findings apply to humans. But our results indicate that the clinical use of marijuana could make people feel better by helping control anxiety and depression.”

Zhang and his co-workers performed behavioral tests on two purified cannabinoids. The test results indicated that these two cannabinoids have anti-anxiety and antidepression-like effects in rats that may depend on the ability of cannabinoids to promote the production of new neurons in the hippocampus. Marijuana contains a complex mixture of chemicals including cannabinoids and may have somewhat different behavioral effects than the purified cannabinoids tested so far.

Previous studies examining the effects of cannabis have highlighted negative aspects of the drug’s use, such as short term memory difficulties, increased heart rate, nausea, and (in a very small percentage of people) hallucinations. Long term studies about cannabis use tend to be controversial as the data is seen to be biased or flawed. The most agreed upon effect of long term cannabis use is lung damage. However, proponents argue that the correlation between cannabis consumption and lung cancer is misleading suggesting that cannabis use may correlate with tobacco use or that the data is not being properly analyzed.

Accidental email brings product placement agency under fire

Sunday, September 21, 2008

An email accidentally sent to Jeff Crouse of the Anti-Advertising Agency recently brought the controversial techniques of the advertising firm Kluger Agency under fire.

“I’m writing because we feel you may be a good company to participate in a brand integration campaign within the actual lyrics of one of the worlds most famous recording artists upcoming song/album,” the email read, offering to place Jeff Crouse’s fake brand, Double Happiness Jeans, into the songs of popular artists. It was posted on his blog along with a reply that mocked Kluger and brought ridicule and criticism against Adam Kugler and his agency. According to Crouse, Kluger emailed him once again to claim it had been an automated email, and later requested that Crouse remove the post and comments criticizing himself and his agency, threatening a $150,000 lawsuit against Crouse for defamation.

Kluger Agency is known for advertising brands like Abercrombie & Fitch, Mercedes-Benz, and Nike by inserting the brand names in the songs of popular artists like Mariah Carey, Black Eyed Peas, Fall Out Boy, Pink, Lady GaGa and Ludacris. Kluger, founded in 2006, represents over 170 corporations and focuses on well-known record labels.

Kluger and his PR team have come forward defending the advertising techniques, stating that they do not have songs made just for the products in question and do not infringe on artistic integrity. “Now, we don’t want an artist to write a song specifically to promote a brand, we just feel that if it’s a product that’s admired by the artist and fits his/her image, we now have the capability of leveling out the playing field and making things financially beneficial for all parties involved,” he was quoted saying to Wired.

However, the agency’s website shows video examples of its product placement, with brand images and names often being repeated, pointed at, praised, or being the basis of the song. The website also advertises that “a successful ‘brand-dropping’ campaign will imprint [the] brand name and product into your market’s subconscious”.

Use the cedilla.

Prefer the single t. (This is not, in fact, a UK vs US spelling issue, as it is the preferred spelling in publications in both.)

Almost always unnecessary, circumlocutious, and/or verbose. Except in direct quotes, recast sentence to remove.

Also properly the Faeroes.

Use lower case, and prefer conflict as war was never declared by the combatants. If the word war must be used, use lower case, eg, Falklands war.

Proper nouns other than people or organizations do not own other proper nouns. “Washington’s Redskins”, “New York’s Hell’s Kitchen”, “Copenhagen’s Hans Christian Andersen” are clumsy at best.

Compares distance, the farther shore rather than the nearer shore. For the non-comparative sense “in addition or more”, use further.

Do not abbreviate.

Not Fathers’.

Not italicized. A religious edict issued by an Islamic sharia (law) scholar.

Do not use for first mention. Use the (US) Federal Reserve (Board) at first mention.

Do not use female councilor, female chair, etc. Use woman councilor, etc.

Initial use full name, e.g. Tønder Festival, Malvern Fringe Festival, and thereafter lower case festival.

With circumflex accent, not italicized.

Use 50-50 chance, capitalized Fifties for the decade, lower case fifties for the age period (not 50s).

Titles of films should be italicized, as Star Wars.

Do not use fire fighter’s jargon. “House fire”, “well alight”, etc.

Serves as an adverb; do not use ‘firstly’. If a list of priorities is required, use first, second, third. Never use first-ever.

Use first-class generally, but when specifying a denomination (postage, train ticket) 1st-class, 2nd-class.

Do not use except in direct quotes. (Also do not use secondly, thirdly etc.)

As noun, no hyphen. Adjectival use, hyphenate first-aid, as in first-aid certificate.

Capitalize where the number is relevant in the story: e.g. Flight 103 (Lockerbie disaster), Flight 93 (9/11).

Often in “the move follows” or similar constructions, and is verbosity. Can usually be reconstructed using “after”.

Refers to the most popular sport in the world, what in the USA is called “soccer”. Always prefer football for this sport.

When referring to other sports called football, use the relevant adjective at first mention. e.g. Irish football, US football, even American football.

When referring to national football leagues of all forms, initial mention must include the country and the formal title after which the locally preferred acronym may be used. The US National Football League, the NFL.

Meaningless phrase; excise on every occasion.

Use the spelling at en.Wiktionary first, en.Wikipedia second. Where there is dispute, choose the Latin script of the legal government of the country.

Prefer English phrases and words over non-English. Terms which have come into reasonably regular English usage are used without italics, including accents and cedilla, in regular Latin fonts. All others should be italicized. Avoid pretentious use.

Relates primarily to the use of science and technology to establish facts in debate, especially in court. In particular, a forensic expert is a witness entering evidence for the court.

In quotes in headings, and at first mention in articles.

In addition, as in a further point. Further is not comparative; for that use farther

Indonesian authorities report refugee boats pushed back by Australian Navy

Monday, January 13, 2014

The Royal Australian Navy towed back arriving asylum seekers to Rote Island, Indonesia, after claiming Christmas Island destination, Indonesian National Police reported Monday of last week. Last Thursday, Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott supported lack of transparency on the issue.

Indonesian police found the two ships reportedly forcibly towed back from Australia on December 19, and on January 6 after being towed on New Year’s Day. A self-identified Sudanese asylum seeker from one of the boats reported the Navy ship numbers, identifying them as HMAS Parramatta and HMAS Glenelg, and said the refugees were denied access to navigation tools during the duration of the route and abandoned in sea in the middle of the night. Commenters called such practice “push-backs”, “tow-backs”, “turn-backs”.

Police chief Hidayat Rote Island, speaking to Fairfax Media, said the second boat was adrift: “They were rescued by the locals, because the boat engines were dead. The boat now is wreckage, near some reefs.”

The Australian government had also planned to purchase additional lifeboats for refugee expulsion from Australian waters, Fairfax Media reported.

Australian government originally had no response, but after protests by Labor and the Greens, Tony Abbott commented. Last Thursday, he supported lack of transparency on the issue by saying “I’d rather be criticised a bit for being a bit of a closed book on the issue, and actually stop the boats. I’m pleased to say that it’s now several weeks since we’ve had a boat, and the less we talk about operational details on the water, the better when it comes to stopping the boats.”

Defence Force chief David Hurley also claimed professional behaviour of board officers and the Navy when handling arriving refugees boats.

Indonesian National Armed Forces chief General Moeldoko said according to the Jakarta Post, and an Australian Defence Force spokesperson confirmed, that they agreed on the push-backs approach mid-December with no further comment; with Mr Abbot calling the relationship “very strong”, while Indonesia’s legal and security affairs minister Djoko Suyanto and foreign affairs minister Marty Natalegawa both disapproved of the approach. General Moeldoko reportedly later said the media had misreported him.

The United Nations Refugee Agency (UNRA) was seeking explanation from the Australian government, it reported in a press briefing this Saturday. The UNRA spokesperson, Babar Baloch, raised legal concerns by saying that “Any such approach would raise significant issues and potentially could place Australia in breach of its obligations under the Refugee Convention and international law. If people who are in need for international protection seek a country’s safety, then they must be allowed to go through a process which helps to determine if these people are in need.”

Marke, another self-identified Somali asylum seeker, claimed earlier similar treatment, on December 10: that the Australian Navy — HMAS Parramatta and HMAS Maitland — had claimed Christmas Island destination, towed his boat for several days, and subsequently dropped at an undisclosed location.

Hurricane Bill now a Category 4 storm

Wednesday, August 19, 2009

Following a period of steady intensification, Hurricane Bill is now a Category 4 major hurricane, as defined by the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Scale.

Bill formed on August 12 and became the 2009 season’s first hurricane on August 17. For the past few days, the storm has been moving toward the west-northwest, but that is expected to change later this week as it turns more toward the north. After that, its track is uncertain, though National Hurricane Center (NHC) forecasters believe the hurricane will pass between Bermuda and the United States.

As of 11 a.m. AST August 19 (0900 UTC August 19), Hurricane Bill was located within 15 nautical miles of 18.0°N 54.9°W, about 460 mi (740 km) east of the Leeward Islands. Maximum sustained winds were near 115 knots (135 mph, 215 km/h), with stronger gusts. Forecasters estimate the storm’s minimum barometric pressure at 950 millibars.

Bermuda could be under the most significant threat from Bill, and officials there have been monitoring the storm’s progress. Derrick Binns, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Labour, Home Affairs and Housing, reported that “We have been following the storm closely since its inception, and today we reviewed our planning and procedures to ensure all are in sync. While we have not as yet issued hurricane warnings, I think it is important to advise residents to check their emergency kits to be sure supplies are adequate.”

Bill is expected to spare the United States from any significant impact, but forecasters advise that since the storm is still several days away, nothing is certain. Indeed, residents of Long Island, New York are keeping a close eye on the cyclone’s progress.

Forecasters also warn that Bill could target parts of eastern Canada. Residents of Nova Scotia, mindful of the extensive damage from Hurricane Juan several years prior, are beginning to take precautionary measures.

Regardless of its exact track, Bill will likely generate rough surf and dangerous rip tides along the coast of the U.S. and Canada.

Tropical cyclones are known to be unpredictable, so interests in the regions potentially in Bill’s path are urged to track the storm’s progress over coming days and review emergency plans.

Website Creation Tips For Beginners

Submitted by: Cary G.

Website creation is something that beginners like you can view as a good prospect. If you create the website yourself, you can mold it to your liking and add as many or as little elements as you like. However, website creation is not an easy task, and you, as beginners, have to look at the things that you need before you actually begin maximizing your web space. The best tip to starting /website creation/ is to get a good domain name.

How do you get a domain name? Website creation begins with getting a domain registered under your name, like buying a lot before building a house. Do not rush into this step if you are not sure about what you are doing. Make sure you have a marketing plan to back you up and guide you through the process. Once you are sure that you are ready, then it is time to get your website online. That means that you should register or reserve your domain name. Your domain name is nothing but your website’s name. It is what makes up your website address and it can end in .com, .org, .net, .info or the suffixes of your country like .de, .us or it can also be the suffix of your business like .tv or .biz. There are a lot of domain names to choose from, and you can maximize the catchiness of your website by choosing the right one.

YouTube Preview Image

Once you have registered the name of your domain, the next step is to select your web host. The web host is basically the basis or the foundation of your website. Sometimes you can see a website that says at the bottom of the home page: “Powered by (web host name)”. This means that that website is being sponsored or “hosted” by that particular service. This is where you can create your pages and publish them into the internet. It is where you can add different website functions like email and IM and even order forms. This is where you log in to maintain and protect your site from malware.

But before going that far, you need to focus on finding a good domain name for your business. If being on top of search engine listings is important for your business, say you are going worldwide, then instead of putting the name of your business in the domain name, you will get more results by putting keywords on the domain name. For example, you have a company called Slim Body Pro, and you sell slimming belts and other slimming clothing. So instead of using slimbodypro.com, you can get more visitors and higher search engine ranking by using slimming-belts-and-clothing.com.

Lastly, do not make the domain name too long. The maximum length of a domain name is around 63 to 65 characters, but you do not have to make it that long. Other than it will be hard to remember, it will be a hassle to type in. If the domain name you chose will be longer than two words, use hyphens to separate them, which will make it easier to understand and remember.

New South Wales government starts trial of hunting in national parks

Monday, February 17, 2014

On Friday afternoon, amateur shooters were briefed about a three-year-long trial of hunting in national parks of New South Wales, Australia. The meeting was held in Griffith near Cocopara Nature Reserve, where the first shooting operation of the trial was to occur on Saturday, targeting the feral goats.

The National Parks Wildlife Service (NPWS) has used aerial culls and baiting to reduce Cocoparra’s goat population, but there are said to be thousands of goats at the reserve. The feral animals to be hunted in other reserves may include cats, deer, dogs, and pigs, beside goats — depending on the reserve.

Shooters in the supplementary pest control trial were to be closely supervised by rangers, as the trial was monitored and its effectiveness evaluated. In a partnership of NPWS and the Sporting Shooters Association of Australia (NSW) Inc, qualified volunteers were recruited, under the Sporting Shooters Association’s hunting program. According to Mick O’Flynn, the Acting Director Park Conservation and Heritage with the NPWS, the four shooters selected for the first shooting operation received comprehensive safety and training instruction.

Following announcement of the close partnership of shooters with NWPS staff, the Greens cancelled planned picketing of the first shooting operation. However, State Greens MP (Member of Parliament) David Shoebridge warned, “This needs to be a government-run program, not run by the biggest gun lobby group in Australia”. He called limiting the meeting to members of the Sporting Shooters Association “outrageous”. Another concern raised by the Greens was the danger of armed people, not only to animals, but also to people visiting the national parks, should the shooters be unsupervised after the trial.

The trial was announced in the second half of 2013, though the plan has been significantly modified over time and has come to be regulated under the National Parks and Wildlife Act, in contrast with the original proposal of recreational hunting in national parks, as it was announced in May 2012 by New South Wales Premier Barry O’Farrell. This amendment of the Game and Feral Animal Control Act was part of a deal with the Shooters and Fishers Party. The government needed at least one vote from a Shooters and Fishers Party MP to pass electricity privatisation legislation, as both Labor and Greens opposed it. O’Farrell’s plans to allow pest control by licensed individuals called for licencing by the Game Council of New South Wales.

Following a report sharply criticizing the Game Council, the government dissolved it in mid-2013, suspended hunting on public lands, and reconsidered the plan to allow amateur hunters into national parks — thus breaking the earlier promise to the Shooters and Fishers Party.

Freighter hits fishing boat in Gulf of Suez; thirteen dead

Tuesday, December 16, 2014

A freighter hit a fishing boat around midnight on Sunday morning in the Gulf of Suez in the Red Sea. Of the 40 Egyptian fisherman on board, thirteen are dead and thirteen more missing.

Survivor Al Sayyed Mohamed Arafat told local media he jumped from the fishing boat, named Badr al-Islam, as the container ship approached. He says he hung onto a wooden crate for four hours before rescue. Local authorities have promised compensation to each survivor.

A vessel, flagged in Panama, suspected to be involved in the collision has been detained by the military. The army said yesterday one victim raised the alarm by phone and the military sent four boats and a helicopter to commence search and rescue off the Gabal al-Zayt coastline.

A plane has since joined the search. The military say the fishing boat lacked safety equipment for emergency communications.

The detained ship was found south of the Gulf, near the port of Safaga. It was carrying 220 tonnes of cargo according to the General Authority for the Red Sea Ports.
