2008 TaiSPO: Interview with Ideal Bike Corporation and Gary Silva

Friday, March 28, 2008

2008 Taipei International Cycle Show (Taipei Cycle) & Taipei International Sporting Goods Show (TaiSPO) not only did a best reunion with conjunctions of the launch of Taipei World Trade Center Nangang Exhibition and the concurrent cycling race of 2008 Tour de Taiwan but also provide opportunities and benefits for sporting goods, bicycle, and athlete sports industries to establish the basis of the sourcing center in Asia and notabilities on the international cycling race.

Although the Taipei cycle was split from the TaiSPO since 1988, but the trends of sporting good industry in Taiwan changed rapidly and multiply because of modern people’s lifestyles and habits. After the “TaiSPO Innovation Award” was established since 2005, the fitness and leisure industries became popular stars as several international buyers respected on lifestyle and health.

For example, some participants participated Taipei Cycle and TaiSPO with different product lines to do several marketing on bicycle and fitness equipments, this also echoed the “Three New Movements” proposed by Giant Co., Ltd. to make a simple bicycle with multiple applications and functions. As of those facts above, Wikinews Journalist Rico Shen interviewed Ideal Bike Corporation and Gary Silva, designer of “3G Steeper” to find out the possibilities on the optimizations between two elements, fitness and bicycle.

WikinewsWhat are the conceptions on the design of 3G Stepper?

Ideal: (As Gary Silva in demonstrations) We merged some basis on a elliptic and a simple fitness stepper, all designed for indoor fitness sporting. After this, the 3G Stepper became a functional bicycle with fitness and transportation. As its steppers were originally designed with lever theory and without bicycle seat, not only its speed was determined by its frequency when stepping, but also a user should use one’s physical strengths and torques (turnings) to balance the 3G Stepper and make a high intensive works on sporting.

WNAlthough the show schedule is concurrent for TaiSPO and Taipei Cycle, but why did you participate the innovation award for the 3G Stepper at TaiSPO?

Ideal: As of mentioned functions before, it can’t be fully thought as a bicycle because of fitness functionality.

WNSo you [Ideal Bike] consider to participate at TaiSPO with fitness factor?

Ideal: Traditionally, a bicycle often worked on a person’s lower-body, but we promoted “3G Stepper” by considering its fitness factor to hope everyone do a great full-body work with its coordination because a rider should use strengths on one’s upper-body to step on the stepper.

WNNot only fitness, but also artificial intelligence? And the other features?

Ideal: Originally, we [Ideal Bike] promoted the 3G Stepper mainly to the bicycle and sporting goods market in United States for leisure and fitness because of a DAMN bad lifestyle especially not sporting and bad beverage culture, which will cause several cardiovascular diseases. By the way, we also designer a smaller version for kids because we hope 3G Stepper is not just a “simple scooter” but a great invention. With this conception, we hope kids can be interested in this stepper and do several trainings on balance. In the past, several people were afraid of a bicycle because its dynamic balance should be done when riding. Last but not least, the 3G Stepper has no limitations on a rider’s heights and clothes.

WNWhat do you think about the concurrent schedule on TaiSPO and Taipei Cycle showcased in different venues?

Gary Silva: As you know, even though the bicycle (industry) is important, but we [Ideal Bike] chose the TaiSPO because of its nature on fitness. I hope that “a bicycle is not just a simple bicycle”.

WNMore than 20 years ago, the Taipei Cycle was ever included in TaiSPO, but after the maturity of export market on bicycle industry, the Taiwan External Trade Development Council (TAITRA) finally split the bicycle (industry) from sporting goods (industry), and currently, it became the current condition as two trade shows showcased each other…

Gary: It sounds like a good idea and a proper split even though the industry natures of bicycle and sporting good are similar, and some buyers also want to gain some sourcing resources from those two (bicycle and sporting good) industries.

WNWhat do you think about a combination on TaiSPO, Taipei Cycle, and Tour de Taiwan?

Gary: Tour de Taiwan?

WNA cycling race.

Gary: Very nice, this combination will bring visitors on those two shows.

WNWill this combination provide benefits on sporting good, bicycle, and athlete sports industries?

Gary: Yes, surely. Because buyers and visitors from those three main activity can understand their each own backgrounds, and this optimization will improve notabilities on two shows and the cycling race.

Leading luxury businesses to form a joint venture

Tuesday, March 6, 2007

Richemont and Polo Ralph Lauren decided to join their skills and rich experience in order to form a joint venture, the name of which is Polo Ralph Lauren Watch and Jewelry Company, S.A.R.L. The representatives of the global luxury business decided to unite their efforts in order to develop luxury timepieces and fine jewelry items.

After the new products are manufactured, they will be distributed through Ralph Lauren boutiques and independent retailers of jewelery items and luxury timepieces. The first jointly developed products are to appear in the fall of the following year.

Richemont and Polo Ralph Lauren will equally share 50 percent of the new joint venture. The partners hope for long-term cooperation. The union will be a completely new experience for both Richemont, which has never cooperated with a luxury fashion designer before, and Polo Ralph Lauren, which, until the present day, has not maintained any links with the precious jewelry and luxury watch businesses.

Ralph Lauren, holding the post of Polo Ralph Lauren’s Chairman and Chief Executive Officer , believes that the company’s experience in the area of designing and marketing luxury lifestyle products will blend with Richemont’s experience on a global scale.

Johann Rupert, owning the position of Richemont’s Executive Chairman counts on Ralph Lauren’s reputation and image based upon distinctive taste, style and attention to detail. He hopes that the newly formed joint venture will benefit from these factors, as well Richemont’s expertise in the area of jewelry and watches.

Images show new dimension to Saturn’s rings

Tuesday, September 22, 2009

NASA’s Cassini orbiter has sent back remarkable images from Saturn, revealing that the planet’s famous rings are far more bumpy than expected.

Astronomers previously thought that the rings were almost completely flat, with changes in height of only a few metres. However analysis of the new images show ridges up to 4 kilometres tall, similar in height to the Rocky Mountains or the Alps.

The images were taken around the planet’s equinox on August 11, when the Sun was directly over Saturn’s equator and caught the rings edge on. A similar equinox occurs today (September 22) on Earth. But whilst equinoxes occur twice a year on Earth, Saturn takes around 29.7 Earth years to orbit the Sun so the events are much rarer.

With the light from the Sun reaching Saturn’s rings at such a low angle, scientists were able to measure the shadows cast by bumps on the rings and discover their surprising height. As Cassini project scientist Bob Pappalardo put it: “It’s like putting on 3-D glasses and seeing the third dimension for the first time. This is among the most important events Cassini has shown us.”

Some of the ring features are known to be caused by Saturn’s moons, but others are harder to explain. “To understand what we are seeing will take more time, but the images and data will help develop a more complete understanding of how old the rings might be and how they are evolving,” said Linda Spilker, Cassini deputy project scientist.

Cassini was launched in 1997, and entered orbit around Saturn in 2004. It is part of the Cassini-Huygens joint mission between NASA, the European Space Agency and the Italian Space Agency.

New ring discovered around Saturn, could explain dark side of its moon

Wednesday, October 7, 2009

Astronomers have found a huge new ring around the planet Saturn. The faint dust ring extends up to 7.4 million miles (12 million km) from the planet and could fit over a billion Earths inside it, making it the largest in the Solar System. It could also solve a mystery about one of Saturn’s moons that has puzzled scientists for centuries.

The ring was found with the help of NASA’s Spitzer Space Telescope, with details published today in the journal Nature. It is thought to consist of ice and dust from Saturn’s moon Phoebe, which is kicked up by collisions with comets and then drifts in towards the planet. The ring and moon both orbit in a plane inclined at 27 degrees to the other rings.

“This is one supersized ring,” said Dr Anne Verbiscer of the University of Virginia, one of the authors of the paper. Of Saturn’s other rings, the largest is the E-ring, a mere 150,000 miles (240,000 km) in diameter. Jupiter also has “gossamer rings” of a similar diameter to the E-ring. If the Phoebe ring was visible from Earth, it would appear twice as large in the sky as the full Moon.

However the newly found ring is extremely faint. It is made up of dust particles around 10 microns (thousandths of a millimetre) in size, and according to Verbiscer, “In a cubic km of space, there are all of 10-20 particles.” This explains why it has evaded discovery until now. “If you were standing in the ring itself, you wouldn’t even know it.”

The Phoebe ring does not reflect much visible light, but the Spitzer telescope was able to pick up the dust’s faint infra-red glow. The telescope, launched in 2003, orbits the Sun and is roughly 66 million miles (107 million km) from Earth. It is one of NASA’s four Great Observatories.

The discovery could also finally account for the unusual appearance of Iapetus, another of the planet’s moons. When Iapetus was first observed in 1671 by astronomer Giovanni Cassini, its leading side was seen to be much darker than the other. Until now scientists had been unsure why this was. Now it is thought that the moon orbits in the opposite direction to the ring, and as Iapetus moves through the ring, dust builds up on its front surface. Verbiscer likens it to “bugs on a windshield.”

“Astronomers have long suspected that there is a connection between Saturn’s outer moon Phoebe and the dark material on Iapetus,” said Douglas Hamilton, another author of the paper. The material has been found to have a similar composition to Phoebe’s surface. “This new ring provided convincing evidence of that relationship.”

This is the second major discovery for astronomers studying Saturn in the past month. In September, evidence from the Cassini orbiter showed that Saturn’s other rings were far less flat than expected.

Muslim hair stylist sues hairdresser over alleged discrimination

Friday, November 9, 2007

British-born Muslim hair stylist Bushra Noah is currently undertaking legal action against the owner of a hair salon for alleged religious discrimination. Noah is suing London hair salon owner Sarah Desroiser. Desroiser who runs a salon in King’s Cross, has said that she would not accept Noah as a stylist if Noah’s hair was covered. Noah, like many devout Muslims keeps her hair covered in public places, believing it to be immodest otherwise.

Noah claims that her headscarf is a fundamental part of her religious beliefs and that wearing the scarf would not interfere in her carrying out the job at all. Desrosiers said that it is not discrimination but rather that “the essence of my line of work is the display of hair. To me, it’s absolutely basic that people should be able to see the stylist’s hair. It has nothing to do with religion. It is just unfortunate that for her covering her hair symbolises religion.” Desosiers added that she had worked with Muslims in the past and employs a Muslim accountant.

Noah claims that the state of her own hair is irrelevant to her ability to style others hair.

The last few years have seen a string of similar cases in Britain. Last year, there was a case over whether a British Airways employee could wear a prominent cross, and another case in which a teacher argued that she had a right to wear a Jilb?b (a traditional Islamic dress that covers almost the entire body) in the classroom. In that case, the teacher lost in the High Court.

A Review Of Tool Inventory Control Systems

By Adriana Noton

Tool Inventory Control is a system for tool management that can reduce unit losses and result in significant new purchase savings. Management systems range from simple, low tech methods to the latest high tech time saving systems. They are incorporated in many business applications and settings including manufacturing plants, construction sites, repair shops, and maintenance operations.

Manual inventories have long been used by business to provide accountability. By checking items in and out the same way a book is accounted for at a library, it is possible to know where the item is, or at least who was last responsible for it. This system makes users more responsible and leaves little room for theft, misplacement, negligent loss, or shifting of blame onto others.

These manual systems have several drawbacks, however. They require multiple people to be involved for verification that transactions occurred and were accurately documented. The process can be time consuming and means that work time is negatively impacted, or additional salaried employees are required.

More recent innovations incorporate the use of identifiers such as bar codes or radio frequency identifiers on each specific unit. Bar code identifiers are the same type as is used in retail applications to track inventory. RFID tags contain an integrated circuit in each tag. These circuits may be encoded with, and store unique identifying information. Each tag also includes an antenna for sending and receiving signals. These tags are also commonly used in retail settings. Cost is relatively inexpensive.

YouTube Preview Image

Applying either of these identifiers to all valuable equipment allows the use of scanners or readers, also known as interrogators, to document in and out transactions. Kits containing multiple pieces can be encoded and read as one transaction as a time saving measure. Readers can be portable, real time, wireless devices for remote use.

Through use of tracking software all transactions are logged using technology and removing some of the human element. This minimizes the opportunity for error or collusion. It allows employees to spend their time working on their projects, while the management software takes care of the paperwork.

Completely automated systems are available. These vending machine type dispersing devices allow the user to complete his transactions independently. By using either his PIN or an ID card he can log into the system. If he is not certified to use the system, or a particular equipment, he can be denied. Access to only the equipment requested is given. Equipment is returned in the same way and other employees need not be taken away from their work, or hired, to monitor the system.

These systems can be used to dispense materials as well. Scales in the storage bin will account for units removed and insure they match the transaction logged by the user. They can also generate purchase orders as the materials are depleted.

Tool Inventory Control systems have evolved as new technology became available. Today’s innovative tool inventory software makes accounting for items and controlling costs from theft, loss, and misplacement easy and cost effective..
