CNN journalist fired for controversial Twitter message

Friday, July 9, 2010

Atlanta-based CNN journalist Octavia Nasr, 20-year veteran of the network and senior editor for Middle East affairs, was reprimanded for a Twitter comment published on Sunday in which she expressed sadness at the death of Iraqi-born Lebanese Grand Ayatollah Mohammad Hussein Fadlallah. In the post, the journalist stated that she was “Sad to hear of the passing of Sayyed Mohammad Hussein Fadlallah.. One of Hezbollah’s giants I respect a lot..“.

According to a New York Times blog, after Parisa Khosravi, the CNN senior vice president, “had a conversation” with Ms. Nasr she was formally asked to step down. She left the network on Wednesday.

Brian Stelter of the Times reports that the issue was originally brought to the public’s attention by online supporters of Israel, who republished the comment widely. They criticised her for being a “Hezbollah sympathizer” for a man who was “committed to the destruction of Israel.” Critics point to comments Fadlallah has made in the past about the Holocaust, in which he questions the veracity of the agreed-upon figures of Jewish deaths in concentration camps.

“Is this the sort of extremist figure that CNN’s Senior Editor of Mideast Affairs should be professing her respect for?” asked HonestReporting, the media watchdog group which purports to defend Israel “against prejudice in the media.”

Salon reporter Glenn Greenwald has responded to these allegations of “prejudice” by pointing to similar cases in which no controversy arose: “The Washington Post lavished editorial praise on the brutal, right-wing tyrant Augusto Pinochet, and that caused no controversy…Benjamin Netanyahu formally celebrates the Terrorist bombing of the King David Hotel that killed…78 civilians and nobody is stigmatized for supporting him. Erick Erickson sent around the most rancid and arguably racist tweets, only to thereafter be hired as a CNN contributor.”

Lebanese author and academic Dr. As’ad Abu-Khalil has also argued that commentators have not properly placed Fadlallah in context, and pointed to the schools and orphanages he founded in Beirut and southern Lebanon. Amira Al Hussaini of Global Voices quotes Abu-Khalil’s post, saying “His [Fadlallah’s] relationship with Hizbullah is always misunderstood…he broke from Wilayat Al-Faqih…and developed a new liberal thinking especially on issues of personal status laws.” He also “urged for a closer relationship between science and religion”, which drew the ire of both Iran and Hizbullah.

Nasr herself clarified her comment the day before her dismissal on a post to her CNN blog, saying that she used the words “respect” and “sad” because “to me as a Middle Eastern woman, Fadlallah took a contrarian and pioneering stand among Shia clerics on woman’s rights. He called for the abolition of the tribal system of ‘honor killing.’ He called the practice primitive and non-productive. He warned Muslim men that abuse of women was against Islam.”

The cleric has been a controversial figure in the West and has been blacklisted by the United States as a terrorist for several years, along with Hizbullah’s leader, Hassan Nasrallah. He is thought to have been the target of a 1985 car bombing in Beirut, which killed 80 people but not the Ayatollah himself. The BBC reports it may have been “the work of the CIA, possibly in conjunction with regional intelligence agencies friendly to the US”, while David Kenner of Foreign Policy writes that the plot was all but confirmed by Bob Woodward through interviews with then-CIA Director William Casey.

Original Story
  • “Hotel development proposal could displace Buffalo, NY business owners” — Wikinews, February 17, 2006

In February of 2006, the Savarino Services Construction Corp. proposed the construction of a seven million dollar hotel on Elmwood and Forest Avenues in Buffalo, New York. In order for the hotel to be built, at least five properties containing businesses and residents would have to be destroyed. It was not certain whether the properties were owned by Savarino or by the landlord Hans Mobius. The hotel was designed by Karl Frizlen of the Frizlen Group, and is planned to be a franchise of the Wyndham Hotels group.

Elmwood Avenue is known by the community as a popular shopping center, and Nancy Pollina of Don Apparel (who is “utterly against” the construction) claims it’s the only reason why students from Buffalo State College leave campus. Additionally, Michael Faust of Mondo Video said he did not want to “get kicked out of here [his video store property].”

In 1995, a Walgreens was proposed to be built on the same land, but Walgreens later withdrew its request for a variance because of pressure from the community. More recently, Pano Georgiadis tried to get the rights to demolish the Atwater House next to his restaurant on Elmwood Avenue, but was denied a permit due to the property’s historical value. He has since been an opponent to the hotel construction.

In the process of debating the hotel, it was thought that a hotel had previously existed on the proposed site, however; research done at the Buffalo and Erie County Historical Society had shown that no hotel had previously existed on the site.

Women’s March becomes largest protest in U.S. history

Tuesday, January 24, 2017

On Saturday, by estimates, over 500,000 women and other protesters — twice the figure expected by organizers — marched through Washington D.C. to protest the inauguration of Donald Trump as president of the United States. They were accompanied by hundreds of thousands of others in hundreds of sister marches in cities across the United States and on all seven continents, including Antarctica.

Though different publications are providing different figures, The Independent reports that between 3.3 and 4.6 million people walked and carried signs, 750,000 in Los Angeles, 575,000 in Washington D.C., 450,000 in New York, 250,000 in Chicago and many smaller figures in other cities, making this the largest protest in American history. In contrast to the protests on the day of the inauguration, not one marcher was reported arrested in Washington D.C., Los Angeles, New York, Chicago or Seattle.

At the march, women, men and children chanted slogans like “This is what democracy looks like!” and “Women’s rights are human rights!” and carried signs evoking images from Rosie the Riveter to Princess Leia or referenced things that Trump had said during his campaign, as in “Fury coming out my wherever” and “Hands too small can’t build a wall.” Though celebrities such as feminist Gloria Steinem and singer Alicia Keys gave speeches, only a fraction of the demonstrators were close enough to hear them.

The idea for a women’s protest to the election of Donald Trump is credited to two people, retired attorney Teresa Shook of Hawaii and fashion designer Bob Bland of Brooklyn. Both women posted their ideas online, gaining many followers before the movement finally merged.

The march’s mission statement reads, in part, “The Women’s March on Washington will send a bold message to our new government on their first day in office, and to the world that women’s rights are human rights. We stand together, recognizing that defending the most marginalized among us is defending all of us.”

Mary Schmich of the Chicago Tribune called the march a response to the “presidential inauguration of a man who has breezily, relentlessly disrespected women and who is set to oversee changes in our laws that go beyond disrespect.” Senior counselor at the Albright Stonebridge Group and former U.S. undersecretary of state for political affairs Wendy R. Sherman wrote in USA Today, “For me, the agenda is clear. It is solidarity. It is saying to the new administration that misogyny cannot rule. Whether reproductive rights, equal pay for equal work, an end to sexual violence, women in combat or the importance of girls’ education worldwide, we are here; we will not relent; we will not give up.”

The march did focus on traditional women’s issues such as reproductive rights but also addressed issues such as gun control and the environment from a female perspective. “Gun violence is a women’s issue,” attendee Amy Schumer posted online, “American women are 16 times more likely to be killed with a gun than in other high-income countries. In an average month, 50 women are shot to death by a current or former partner in the United States. Approximately 4.5 million American women have been threatened with guns, and guns are the weapon of choice in domestic murders.” “A healthy environment is a basic right for all of us,” stated Natural Resources Defense Council President Rhea Suh.

The event organizers’ stated principles included “open access to safe, legal, affordable abortion and birth control for all people, regardless of income, location or education” and Planned Parenthood was the march’s single biggest sponsor.

“I think it’s important that a pro-life feminist voice is there. I am not going to protest,” antiabortion activist Abby Johnson told the Washington Post. “I am going to join in solidarity[…] and to be honest, abortion is not the only issue I’m concerned about. I’m concerned about the pay gap. I’m concerned about the lack of women in the political arena. There are a lot of things that are important to me.”

The following day, President Trump responded, via separate tweets, “Why didn’t these people vote?” and “Peaceful protests are a hallmark of our democracy. Even if I don’t always agree, I recognize the rights of people to express their views.”

Stolen minibus recovered 35 years after theft

Friday, November 6, 2009

A 1965 Volkswagen minibus that was stolen in 1974 has been recovered by customs agents in Los Angeles. The vintage minibus was in pristine condition, valued at $25,000, and was found during a routine inspection of a shipping container scheduled for departure to The Netherlands. A routine computer database search on its vehicle identification number flagged it as having been stolen from a vehicle upholstery shop in Spokane, Washington on July 12, 1974. A custom restoration business in Arizona was attempting to deliver it to overseas clients last month when authorities intercepted the vehicle.

“Pretty amazing, isn’t it?”

The theft appeared on the National Insurance Crime Bureau database, which is used by border authorities and contains all stolen vehicle records. Most police databases remove unsolved vehicle thefts after five years.

The California Highway Patrol does not suspect the restorer of wrongdoing, according to investigating officer Mike Maleta. Possession of the vehicle apparently changed several times. Police in Spokane have not yet located the rightful owner, whose identity has not been released to the press. Maleta hopes that a trail of registration documents and interviews will uncover the thief.

“[The restoration firm owner is] a victim himself. He was an innocent purchaser…”

The Allstate insurance company paid $2500 shortly after the theft occurred and wants to take possession of the vintage minibus. Allstate spokeswoman Megan Brunet expects that after the necessary paperwork is processed the firm will sell it at auction.

Choosing A Driving Instructor Inverness.}

Choosing a driving instructor Inverness.

by

abigaylemark1

Driving lessons cost money and as a result, most people tend to postpone when they will go to learn to drive Inverness classes. However, there are those who can manage the cost of the minimum of 47 hours that the DSA recommends is the minimum number of hours for you and your driving instructor Inverness to practice before you can take the driving test. Considering the cost of taking driving lessons, it is important that you choose and instructor that can deliver.

When it comes to choosing an instructor, the DVSA came up with an easy to understand structure for the grades made by driving instructors; it was released in the hope that those who are planning to start driving lessons can use it to base their decision on a choice of instructor. According to the DVSA; instructors with a grade point of above 85% have a high standard of instruction, those with 60% and above are considered to have an average of competence. Any instructor with a performance below 60% is considered to have an unsatisfactory performance.

For you who is trying to learn to drive Inverness, you may need to do more than look at pass grades to base your decision on which instructor to use. There are other things like comportment with students and the ability to give lessons in a way that can be easily understood. The fact that an instructor had 85% on the exam does not automatically make them a wonderful teacher. As such, you, the learner will have done your homework.

Start by asking your friend who had taken lessons before if they have any one they could recommend. Also use the internet to check the forums on driving lessons in your area. You may be lucky to get a lot of information about instructors and their manner of conducting lessons. Make sure to talk to more than one instructor before choosing.

If you will be studying with a driving school Inverness, ask if you will be allowed to choose your driving instructor. Some schools will automatically assign you an instructor immediately you register while the other will allow you to choose. The only reason you may want to choose at this point is if you have a fore knowledge of some of the instructors at the school. If you do not, you may have to go with the instructor they assign you until you start lessons and feel you cannot connect with them. At that time you can ask for a change.

Another idea when choosing the driving instructor Inverness is to choose one that does not live far from you. In this way he can pick you up and drop you off after lessons. Therefore, if you go to a school to ask for lessons, make sure to tell them you want an instructor who lives within a certain radius of your neighbourhood.

Given the cost of driving lessons today, you don’t want to pay for lessons and can’t get the best just because you were assigned the wrong instructor. You are the one paying for lessons so you can afford to make demands. If you know an instructor that you will prefer, request for them. Even if you don’t know, do not accept to waste your money working with the wrong instructor. Immediately ask for a change.

When you have decided it is time to learn to drive Inverness (http://johnfinnigandrivingtuition.co.uk), make sure to come to John Finnigan Driving School. We have the most qualified and experienced driving instructor Inverness (http://johnfinnigandrivingtuition.co.uk) and your lessons are sure to be fun.

Oil on Canvas Advertising Art is Special and Unique

by

Stephanie Ellsey

The pieces of art that are on the walls in your home are great for adding interest to otherwise plain walls and for showcasing your personal style. Antique artwork is a great way to spice up any room in your home and there are many unique pieces out there that you can choose from at a quality antique dealer shop. One form of art that is truly one-of-a-kind and can be found for sale today is oil on canvas advertising art. This type of art was prevalent in the 18th century in England.

Original advertising art was created by artists who were designing advertising pieces for companies. These pieces of art were done on canvas or other materials and were created with the use of the finest oil paints for a rich look. Often, before an ad was approved an artist made the piece of oil on canvas advertising art and then the editors would mark the piece to show where they wanted changes to be made. Many of these antique original advertising art pieces that have the editing marks and notes on them can be bought today and are truly special because they have never been seen by the general public.

Another great thing about purchasing oil on canvas advertising art is that it was made with very high quality materials so that it will stand the test of time. These art pieces will last for a lifetime and will continue to look beautiful for the entire time that you have them. They are something special and different than most works of art because they were created originally to market an item or product, so they add a whimsical nature to wherever you put them. These pieces were created to sell items, so there are very few of these original advertising art paintings around, giving you almost a guarantee that you will have something different from everyone else.

You can find these canvas paintings at an antiques dealer that purchases high quality original artworks. These dealers have the connections to find you specific advertising art items that you want, or you can look at the large collections that they have for sale. Give your home an old-fashioned dash of style with original advertising art that you purchase from an antiques dealer.

Use oil on canvas advertising art pieces to liven up any room in your home. They will add interest to the rooms that they are in and will spark interesting discussions among your visitors.

If your living room or office needs a special piece of furniture that will draw the eye and add timeless beauty to the room, you may be having trouble finding such an item at the regular stores near you. Modern furniture is often cheaply made and mass produced, so that no matter what store you are shopping at, the furniture will all look the same. Finding the right desk or writing table may be a challenging task, but if you try an English antiques dealer, you may be pleasantly surprised. A good dealer will sell antique English Victorian writing tables, as well as Georgian writing tables that are impeccably designed and eye catching in their elegance.

The Wellesley House, LTD. offers a huge selection of

Oil On Canvass Advertising Art

. Original decorative paintings submitted by famous design artists.
